Introduction

The Digital Communication Laboratory (DCL), Institute of Photonics and Communications (IPC),  is one of the most productive and newly emerging research facilities in National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST). This laboratory purports to be a site of excellence in theory and applications of image processing, pattern recognition, and AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection) system in Industry 4.0 applications.

The research horizon is developing as a result of contacts with international research community, as well as funded research projects. DCL has started with significant research and equipment grants from
Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), as well as NKUST funds. These funds were instrumental in setting the laboratory infrastructure and equipment purchases.

Samples of current and prospective research interests and projects under the umbrella of NKUST and MOST are as follows: robust face detection and recognition, personality analysis based on fingerprint, hand, or eyes, and AOI projects for Industry 4.0 based on smart computing.
